Sailing to Papegaaien Eiland

Departure from Corantijn Zeedijk

Corantijn Zeedijk is the place where the small boats depart for Guyana, a Dutch company is building a pier for a ferry link between Surinam and Guyana. Mr. Baid is the man to see for hiring a boat.

Looking for a landingsite

Sailing south between Papegaaien Eiland and Surinam mainland looking for a landing site. The building on the right is a Chinese woodprocessing plant. The man sailing the boat is Mr. Pi, the man in front is Mr. Kishoor.

The intens vegetation on Papegaaien Eiland

The intens vegetation on Papegaaien Eiland makes it hard to find a landing site. You can see the layer of mud surrounding the island. We tried walking through the mud to the island for one time but gave up after a few minutes. You dissapear in the mud up to your stomach and this with the intens heat exhausts you very fast.

Approaching Papegaaien Eiland from Corantijn River

The day of the operation, sailing on Corantijn River we are approaching the island from the riverside.

Landing at Papegaaien Eiland

The day of the operation, landing on Papegaaien Eiland, the only strip of sand on the entire island. I was operating from the left strip of sand with a Fritzel tribander vertical, A Kenwood TS50 and car batteries for the power.
