The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135)

If you receive this error message, you need to download and install the .NET Framework 2.0 from this location.

Create custom Date & Time formats

You can modify the date and time format in the alert and log window. Here are some examples and how to create them.

MMM d, h:mm == Nov 4, 9:23
ddd, d MMM @ HH:mm:ss == Wed, 4 Nov @ 21:23:01

M\/d, h:mm tt == 11/4, 9:23 AM (note the escape (\) character)

The "Customize alert" window explained

The Preferences -> Customize -> Tray Alert window has a lot of options, here is a screenshot with some explanation (hover mouse over options to see help text). There is also an example here.

Preferences Screenshot This checkbox enables or disables the use of the custom tray alert settings in Spiffy. These checkboxes enable or disable the associated text fields in the alert. The X setting is the starting pixel of the associated textbox (horizontal). The Y setting is the starting pixel of the associated textbox (vertical). This is the Width of the associated textbox (starting from X,Y) Draws the associated text Bold or Italic (or both). Centers the text in the associated textbox (if unchecked text is aligned left). Sets the color of the associated text. Change font type and size. Reset all settings to default. Preview custom alert. Set custom date/time format (click help icon for more information). Browse for a custom background (bmp or png). Clear custom background. If set, the location of the custom background file. Image Map

Where is Spiffy installed?

Spiffy is installed in your Program Files folder, or Program Files (x86) for 64-bit machines.

Where is the configuration saved?

Settings are saved in your Windows profile (ApplicationData\Spiffy or AppData\Roaming\Spiffy).

Run Spiffy as portable application

If you run Spiffy outside your "Program Files" folder it will switch to USB Mode and save your settings in the same location as the executable. You can copy spiffy.exe from your installation folder or direct download the latest version here.

Save configuration to a custom location

If you want to save you configuration anywhere else use this feature.
For example you want to save in F:\spiffy\config start Spiffy like this: "F:\spiffy\spiffy.exe F:\spiffy\config"

Your Windows shortcut properties should look something like this.

Configure a 'Google Notifier' like, tray icon

Open the Configuration window and go to Alerts, check "Change tray icon on new e-mail, and use this icon...."
Select the icon you want from the dropdown menu....

Now to set the default "no mail" icon go to Customize - Icon and under Options - Default Icon select the "Gray" from the dropdown menu.

Hit OK and your done!

Check the All Mail, Starred and Spam folders

To check the All Mail, Starred or Spam folders use these labels in Spiffy;
  • all
  • starred
  • spam


Set Gmail as default mail client in Firefox

You can set Firefox to handle mailto links with Gmail by doing the following:
  • go to Tools > Options
  • select the Applications tab
  • search for mail
  • select Use Gmail from the list of actions associated with the mailto protocol
  • click OK to save the settings


Perfom a silent installation of Spiffy

To install Spiffy without any user interaction start the installer with the /S argument.
